Here in Cheltenham we enjoy fantastic festivals all year round from literature and Jazz to Science. However, it would be fair to say our most famous festival of all is ‘The Festival’, the shinning jewel in the National Hunt calendar held once a year in March. The Cheltenham Gold Cup festival entails 4 days of magic, magnificence and madness, played out on a stage framed by the breath-taking vista of the Cotswold Hills.
For those of you who are not familiar with this festival, here is a brief history on our magnificent racecourse: the first organised Flat race meeting in Cheltenham took place in 1815 on Nottingham Hill, with the first races on Cleeve Hill in August 1818. In 1831 the racecourse was moved to Prestbury Park its current location.
This four day event gathers and entices many famous faces, not forgetting members of the Royal family such as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Last year Zara Philips, Princess Anne and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall all attended Ladies Day, a Cheltenham’s version of Royal Ascot, filled with stunning hats, fascinators and beautiful attire.
